What is implant treatment?
In dental treatment, an implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jawbone (alveolar bone) that supports the teeth.
Implant treatment, like dentures and bridges, is a treatment to replace missing teeth.
Implant structure
Implants can be broadly divided into three parts: the superstructure that corresponds to the tooth (artificial tooth and artificial crown), the fixture that is embedded in the bone (implant body and artificial root), and the abutment that connects the superstructure and the implant body.
The materials used for the superstructure are ceramic, resin (plastic), or hybrid ceramic (a combination of ceramic and resin), for the fixtures are titanium or titanium alloy, and for the abutments are titanium, titanium alloy, or zirconia.
There are two methods for fixing an implant to the bone: screw fixation, which fixes the superstructure and abutment with screws, and cement fixation, which uses cement as an adhesive to fix the superstructure and abutment.
At our clinic, our doctors analyze the patient's requests and select the fixation method that best suits each individual patient.
Advantages and disadvantages of implant treatment
Benefit
Implants can firmly fix artificial tooth roots, so they provide a chewing sensation similar to that of natural teeth. They also have excellent aesthetic qualities.
Demerit
Compared to other treatments, the treatment period is longer and the treatment costs are higher. In addition, compared to natural teeth, dental implants are more susceptible to infection, so regular maintenance, including prevention of periodontal disease, is required.
In addition, since implant treatment requires surgery, people with poor overall physical condition, such as those with systemic diseases, may not be able to undergo implant treatment.
If there is not enough bone in the area where the implant will be placed, a bone graft or filling may be used.
About implant surgery
Implants may be placed in one surgery or in two separate procedures.
In order to reduce fear and pain during surgery, our clinic provides pain control through local anesthesia as well as intravenous sedation, which allows patients to feel as if they are asleep during treatment.
Maintenance after implant treatment
After implant treatment, you need to be careful about peri-implantitis.
Like periodontal disease, this disease dissolves bone, so there is a risk of losing the implants that have been worked so hard to place.
In order to avoid losing your implants, it is important to perform regular maintenance including daily plaque control.
