Research results on plasmalogen were presented at the 21st General Meeting of the Japanese Society of Anti-Aging.

Dr. Junichi Taguchi, director of our clinic, Dr. Yuichiro Tanto, vice director of Nihonbashi Muromachi Mitsui Tower Midtown Clinic, and Kayoko Suzuki, director of Nursing and Functional Training Services, Senior Life Business Planning Department, Trust Garden Co., Ltd., a Resort Trust group company, presented the results of their research on "The Effects of Plasmalogen Granules on Residents of Elderly Care Facilities" at the 2021st General Meeting of the Japanese Society of Anti-Aging Medicine held on Sunday, June 6, 27.

In this study, a clinical trial was conducted on 21 elderly subjects (aged 61-97 years, average age 86.9 years, 8 men and 13 women) who were unable to take conventional "Plasmalogen" (capsules/soft capsules) due to swallowing difficulties, to confirm the effects of Plasmalogen granules on core symptoms of dementia and sleep quality.

The research results showed that even in a group consisting of the very elderly (those aged 90 or older), taking Plasmalogen granules resulted in significant improvements in "concentration (brain reaction speed, attention)" and "recent (short-term) memory" in a "brain performance (brain health) self-check."

<Concentration: ① Brain reaction speed + ② Attention>

Concentration: ① Brain reaction speed + ② Attention

<Memory: ④ Immediate (short-term) memory>

Memory: 4. Immediate (short-term) memory

In this clinical trial, the subjects were mostly very elderly, with an average age of 86.9 years old, and no significant improvements were observed in the plasmalogen group in any other areas besides those mentioned above. However, in the future, we plan to increase the number of cases and conduct tests on a group in their 70s to examine the effects on early mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and other conditions.

While there are few reported clinical trials targeting the very elderly, these results suggest that Plasmalogen granules may be a useful dementia intervention tool in nursing care facilities.
