Message from Director Taguchi: "Protecting brain health"

The big problem in preventive medicine going forward isPreventing frailty, locomotor syndrome, and dementiaIt is said.

The stage before dementia is mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but in both cases irreversible changes such as amyloid deposition have progressed. It has been proven that treatment at this stage is difficult even with the latest drugs.

The most important thing is to prevent the brain changes themselves before they occur. This is the same as preventing arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries before a myocardial infarction occurs.

I have summarized this under the theme of "protecting brain health" as follows.

Protect your brain health

First, it is important to know the current state of your brain.
Until now, the only tests available were cognitive function tests such as MMSE, but these are not suitable for early preventive diagnosis.
Recent advances in AI have made it possible to measure and compare the volume of each part of the brain, including the hippocampus, which is the memory area. This is merely a way to check the health of the brain.

Next, genetic risk assessment is also possible. Risk factors for Alzheimer's and cerebrovascular disease have been identified. It has been proven that genetic risk can be reduced by improving lifestyle habits.

Finally, it is important to know what kind of lifestyle improvements and interventions are important. I have attached a summary document for that purpose. We would like to consider more specific diet and exercise methods and develop an app system to support them in the future.

These will likely be the most important goals of preventive medicine in the future.
We would like to actively promote this.
