Did you know? Types of bad breath
There are many different causes of bad breath, including some that are caused by illness. There are three main types of bad breath:
Physiological bad breath
Bad breath can happen to anyone. The smell gets stronger after waking up, when you're hungry, or when you're nervous. This is because a decrease in saliva secretion leads to an increase in bacteria in the mouth, which produces a large amount of gas called volatile sulfur compounds. To prevent this, it is effective to increase saliva by eating and drinking, and to brush your teeth.
Bad breath caused by food
Bad breath is caused by strong smelling foods such as onions and garlic, or by smoking. Both are temporary and the smell will fade over time.
Pathological bad breath
Most pathological bad breath is caused by abnormalities in the mouth, such as periodontal disease, cavities, tartar, etc. However, it is important to be aware that bad breath can also be caused by sinusitis, digestive diseases, diabetes, etc.
What causes bad breath?
Caries
Bacteria and food debris accumulate in cavities caused by tooth decay, which leads to bad breath. As the disease progresses and the nerves rot, it produces a strong odor.

Tongue coating is a mass of bacteria that adheres to the surface of the tongue like a layer of moss, and appears as a whitish deposit. It can be removed by cleaning the tongue.
Dental plaque
Plaque is mostly made up of bacteria that adhere to the surface of teeth. It feeds on food residue and turns into tartar over time, which can lead to cavities and periodontal disease.

Since the mouth and nose are connected, pus from sinusitis or throat inflammation can flow into the mouth, which can lead to bad breath. Bad breath can also be caused by diseases of the digestive system. Treating the disease that is causing bad breath can also help eliminate the odor.
To prevent bad breath
To prevent bad breath, it is important to maintain a good oral environment. Periodontal disease in particular can cause bad breath, so be sure to brush your teeth regularly to prevent bad breath.
