What is Gum Peeling?
Gum peeling is a treatment that uses lasers and chemicals to restore your gums to their original, beautiful pink color.
Causes of dark gums include smoking, brushing your teeth too hard, and breathing through your mouth, which causes the deposition of melanin pigment, which leads to dark gums.
Chemical removal (chemical gum peeling)
Chemical gum peeling is a method of applying a chemical called a phenol to the gums, denaturing proteins and removing the melanin pigment deposited on the surface of the skin.
Chemical gum peeling process
1. Cleaning and disinfecting gums
Removes dirt and disinfects.
2. Topical anesthesia
Because phenol is irritating, an anesthetic is applied to the gums.
3. Application of phenolic agent
A phenol agent is applied to the pigmented areas of the gums.
4. Neutralization with alcohol
Apply alcohol to the cloudy areas to neutralize the phenol.
5. Washing with water
Finish by rinsing with water.
Notes and FAQs
Q: Is there anyone who cannot receive chemical gum peeling?
A: Those who are allergic to the chemicals used (phenol or alcohol) cannot receive this treatment.
Q: I am pregnant. Can I receive treatment?
A: It is thought that there will be no effect during pregnancy, but as there is no proven data, we recommend treatment after giving birth.
Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: In most cases, one treatment is sufficient, but multiple treatments may be necessary if the melanin pigmentation is severe.
Q: Does the treatment hurt?
A: Topical anesthesia will be administered, but you may feel a tingling pain depending on the individual.
You may experience some discomfort after the procedure.
Q: Will the effects be immediate?
A: Usually, it takes about 1 to 2 weeks for the gums to become healthy.
After the procedure, a white film will form on your gums, but it will start to peel off naturally in about 3 to 4 days, so please do not try to remove it yourself.
Q: Is there anything I should be careful about after treatment?
A: Please avoid eating spicy or salty foods and smoking.
If you smoke, the staining may reoccur. Also, you may experience bleeding when brushing. Be careful not to brush your gums.
Metallic pigmentation
In dental treatment, metals are sometimes used for dental fillings and crowns. These metals may dissolve over time and cause discoloration of the gums. This type of pigmentation cannot be removed by gum peeling.
Metal-free treatment can prevent darkening by avoiding the use of metals that cause pigmentation.
